The large, up to 5 foot tall flower stalks emerge from fleshy underground rhizomes. The inflorescence have waxy, pink, edged bracts with a skirt of larger bracts. Foliage is dark lush green in color. Enjoys warmer climate - flowers well throughout the year. In the tropics there is never a time when it does not have at least one flower on it. Foliage height around 9 ft but can get 12 ft in more shaded positions.
All gingers are closely related to heliconias, flowering bananas, cannas, and marantas. Due in part to their large showy flowers, they have gained rapid popularity as garden elements. Excellent, long lasting cut flower. The unopened flower buds are edible and very flavorful, and they are used in Southeast Asian cooking. Zone 9b+ or greenhouse. Once the plant is established, corms can be lifted for the winter in colder areas.
