Eastern redbud is a native, deciduous, small ornamental tree or shrub with arching branches that form a wide, flat-topped crown. It is one of the first trees to bloom in early spring, the flowers appear before the leaves as conspicuous, pink to purplish, pea-shaped flowers in clusters along the twigs and small branches. These beautiful Redbud flowers grow on the trunk as well as the limbs and branches of the tree. The leaves are alternate, heart-shaped, 3" to 5" long and wide, turning yellow in the fall followed by flattened, seeded pods often hanging on the tree through the following winter. Parts of this tree is edible, buds raw, pickled or cooked. Flowers raw or cooked, young pods fried. Flowers fry nicely as well.
Eastern redbud is a relatively easy tree to grow, particularly suited to full sun to part shade and well-drained soils. The tree does equally well in acidic or basic soils. Zones 6+. Container suitable.

Other Names: Canadian Redbud, Judas Tree
