Polygonum capitatum is a evergreen perennial ornamental plant forming a clump of creeping, much-branched stems. The stems produce a dense mat of growth about 6 inches high. Zone 7-11. The lance-shaped leaves are between 2 and 11 inches long, edged with dark red, and marked with burgundy chevrons. In mild regions, the leaves are evergreen, staying on the plant all year long. The pink pompom flowers, each about 2 inches long, bloom from spring through the first freeze. They cluster in globe-shaped flower spikes above the foliage. Will reseed and make the patch more compact. Nice in rock gardens, potted arrangements, baskets, edging in a border or where it would spill over the edges. Has various medicinal benefits.
