Colorful, showy, and edible! Strawberry Tree, Arbutus Unedo, is a broad leaf evergreen shrub or small tree with flowers that draw hummingbirds, butterflies and honeybees.
It typically grows in a multi-stemmed form, but can be trained as a single trunk tree. It matures to 8 – 10 foot and bears urn-shaped, aromatic, pinkish-white flowers in drooping bunches. Long-stemmed, spherical fruits appear in winter after the flowers, but take almost a full year to ripen. As new white flowers begin to bloom in October, the fruits from the preceding winter ripen to strawberry red, leaving the plant with the unusual situation of having both attractive flowers and ripe fruit at the same time. Although the ripe fruits have the same color as strawberries, they do not have the same flavor as strawberries. Those who utilize the edible fruit make jams, juice, syrup, liquors, wine or use it in cakes, pies, ice cream and other and desserts. Is a tough, reliable shrubby tree for difficult spots hardy to zones 7-9. Container and Bonsai suitable.
