This beauty is an old native Indian heirloom variety called Strawberry corn because the cobs looks like large strawberries. It produces anywhere from 2 to 4 miniature 3 to 5″ cobs with bright strawberry red kernels on each stalk. The stalks of Strawberry corn are smaller in size, growing anywhere from 3 to 5′ tall to maturity. Highly sought after in the gourmet food industry.
That size works well planting seed by tucking it into your regular landscape beds. It blends in well with the tall grasses and adds a little extra dimension and beauty to the bed space.
North American Indians initially used them for beading in personal adornment. Also excellent for Fall decorations and tastes great popped.
This a local heirloom corn, not to be confused with the red types offered from china, which is usually died.
