Callisia fragrans, commonly known as False Bromeliad, Inch Plant, Octopus Plant or Basket Plant, is a species of the genus Callisia, in the family Commelinaceae. It native to Mexico and parts of South America. It has become naturalized in parts of the southern United States and in the West Indies. As a subtropical species, it performs best in controlled climates or in warm ones from zones 9-11, and can be used as a groundcover. It makes a great houseplant in cooler areas. It has a rich traditional reputation in Mexico as a medicinal plant with many confirmed health benefits. The leaves and flowers of Callisia fragrans are edible, the plant has been used as a food source in tropical countries. The rhizomes are also edible and can be boiled or roasted.
