The variety is of uncertain origin but was found in Medici gardens in the 17th century. It is quite vigorous, hardy and very productive with a rounded, spreading habit and medium sized, oval-elliptic leaves. The white, fragrant flowers grow singly or in clusters. It re-flowers abundantly and continually from spring to autumn. The medium sized fruit is spherical with flattened ends, and a nipple surrounded by a circular furrow. The fairly thin, yellow rind is rich in essential oils and loosely attached to the flesh, which is light yellowish-green, very juicy and aromatic, with a sweet rather than sour flavor. It is an ideal ornamental plant due the constant re-flowering and the lengthy persistence of the fruit on the tree.Zone 9-11 or container.
Low acidity not only lends this citrus standout its sweetness—it also gives it a unique flavor. Sweet limes can be eaten like any ripe fruit.
The plant is used for ornamental purposes as well as for graft stock.
