Bristlemallow is a creeping perennial which is probably native to South America but which is widely naturalized throughout the tropical and warmer temperate world. It is known for its sprawling habit and small, attractive red flowers and unique seed heads. The plant typically grows close to the ground, with stems that can spread outwards several feet from the plant’s center.
Its only common use is to make a refreshing cold tea by soaking the shredded leaves in water for a couple of hours, staining, then serving over ice. This tea was drank by Natives and Cajuns to fight overheating. Many drink it every day. This pretty herb may be considered invasive in some areas and in cultivated landscapes.
Full sun to partial shade, well-drained, sandy or loamy soils; tolerant of a range of soil types. Zone 6-11.

Other Names: bristly-fruited mallow, babosilla, redflower mallow.
