Arnica is a perennial clump forming herb which is grown in Siberia and central Europe and has been used as a herbal remedy for medicinal purposes since the 1500’s. It is also found sparsely in North America.
It grows 1 to 2 feet tall with bright, yellow daisy-like flowers that appear in July and August. It is found on the moist, grassy upland meadows in the hills and mountains. It is a hardy alpine perennial that enjoys a cool climate and good drainage in acidic soil, making it well suited to rock gardens and raised beds. The starry golden yellow flowers will attract pollinators all summer long.
Arnica can be used as an ointment, gel, or cream on unbroken skin or taken internally when it is diluted homeopathically. Perennial, zones 4-8.
