Eyeball plant or Peek-a-boo plant, it's all the same in the garden. Called "Spilanthes" by most gardeners, this plant has a common Latin name of Acmella oleraceas. The leafy plant has orb (eyeball) shaped "flowers" that are yellow with dark red centers. Used mainly in the west as an ornamental plant-potted or in beds-it is an annual. Because it self seeds it also acts like a perennial.
The plant offers a lot medicinal potential. Used in several ways, it is especially noted as having antimicrobial and analgesic properties. It earned its name "toothache plant" with the numbing sensation it produces when the flower is chewed. A chemical within the plant, called spilanthol, acts like benzocaine. It can medically be used for sore throats and mouth pains generated by braces.
The plant is also noted as a natural insecticide, especially effective against mosquitoes. Zone 9+
