This variety of Salpiglossis, also known as Painted Tongue, is hard to come by and offers up very unusual purple-black flowers with strong veins. Salpiglossis have open-faced, trumpet-like flowers. Native to southern Chile, this stunning plant was introduced to the northern hemisphere in the 1820s.
Salpiglossis is a relatively upright grower, reaching up to 3 feet in the garden. Flowers are 2-3" inches in diameter. Most of them are overlaid with veins and other patterns, making them look like stained glass.
The flowers have a five-lobed funnel-shaped corolla, up to 2.5" in long, each lobe with a notched apex, velvety in texture, either violet or orange, and have contrasting darker stripes along each petal.
Half-hardy annual to 3 feet. Makes nice cut flowers which last well in water.
