Ipomoea cairica is a species of morning glory which has many common names, including mile-a-minute vine, Messina creeper, Cairo morning glory, coast morning glory and railroad creeper. This vining perennial has palmate leaves and large showy abundant flowers.
The slender stems are hairless growing in a twining habit, and sometimes produce roots at the joints. The alternately arranged leaves are distinct and divided into typically five narrow lobes, like the fingers of a hand. The funnel-shaped flowers are purple to pinkish-purple with a darker purple center and have five petals. Flowering occurs throughout most of the year. Excellent in a container or hanging basket, it even grows on sand.
It prefers rich but well drained soil with partial sun. USDA zone 8b+, or grown as an annual in colder climates.
Has some useful medicinal properties.
