Originally from South American Colombia and Peru, Uchuva, Aguaymanto or Poha Berry is a fuzzy-leaved Berry bush that produces about a 1" inch sweet/tart berry with smooth orange skin, resembling a Tomatillo. The taste has been described as a combination of strawberries, pineapple, and even a little peach flavor. The Fruits are used raw or cooked, in salsa, pies, cakes, jellies, jams, ice cream, over meat dishes or salads, garnish and dried into golden raisins.
This plant typically grows to about 2 to 3 feet, but supported it can reach up to 6 feet. The bell shaped yellow flowers and heart shaped large leaves give the Berry a tropical appearance.
Plants prefer soil types that are well-drained. Even if the soil is nutritionally poor, the plant will still grow well, and it prefers acidic soil. Physalis Peruviana is very adaptable and can grow in full sun to partial shade. An annual in temperate regions and a perennial in frost free zones.
