Russian heirloom variety, named after its place of origin, the Isle of Krim in the Black Sea, south of the Republic of Ukraine. Extremely tasty. The beefsteak fruits are a unique combination of violet-brown and purple-red—they turn almost black with sufficient sunlight and heat. 80 days. Of all the "black" tomatoes, this is one of the best. Medium to large fruits may weigh from up to 16 oz. Color darkens as summer heat intensifies. Indeterminate.
The dark pigments responsible for the purplish tones are called anthocyanins, a type of phytonutrient, or plant compound, hailed for its potential disease-fighting benefits.
