Square flowers, who knew! Paronychia rugelii, common name Rugel's nailwort, is a plant native to the US states of Georgia and Florida but has also been seen in Texas and Alabama. It can be found in woodlands and on disturbed sites at elevations below 700 feet. It occurs naturally in sandy habitats such as pine flatwoods, sandhills, scrub and disturbed areas
They are sometimes referred to as sand squares. Paronychia rugelii is an annual herb that grows to 20 inches tall, nearly the entire above-ground parts with hairs. Leaves are ovate to lanceolate and the flowers are reddish-brown and white. The common name “Nailwort” is a reference to the plant’s presumed medicinal properties. Zone 8-10.
