In western Europe, it is largely confined to sea coasts where salt spray off the sea prevents other larger plants from out-competing it, but in central Asia it is more widespread in dry semi-desert sites where other plants cannot survive the dry conditions. Seaberry has branches that are dense and stiff, and very thorny. They are tolerant of salt in the air and soil, but demand full sunlight for good growth and do not tolerate shady conditions near larger trees. Produces masses of berries.
The showy fruit has a pleasant aroma and can be eaten raw or cooked. Very rich in vitamin C (120mg per 100g), Vitamin E and vitamin A. Used for making Jams, Jellies, Sauces, teas, soaps and cremes. Perfect for drying and preserving. It is being increasingly used in making fruit juices, especially when mixed with other fruits, because of its reputed health benefits. Zone 4+
