Jersey Kale (Circa 1700) is a famous Channel Islands (between Great Britain and France) heirloom kale that makes a tall, straight stem, 6 Ft tall topped with a palm like rosette of edible leaves. Plants left in a 2nd year may increase in height to over 9 Ft. Before it reaches this size, however, you can strip it of its lower leaves, dry the stalk, and fashion it into a perfectly serviceable walking stick, painting it with varnish. Also used for fences and trellises. Full sun & rich soil is best, can tolerate less than perfect conditions.
This is a true novelty and vegetable with huge ornamental value. Still widely unknown, it makes a great conversation piece.
