Popular in Hawaii for the making of leis, this vine originated in Southeast Asia. A member of the milkweed family, pakalana grows to 15 feet in the ground and to 2-3 feet in containers. It has heart shaped leaves and the very fragrant 5 petal flowers appear in dangling clusters of 15 to 25 blooms from spring into fall. Generally greenish yellow with cream-colored centers, they often darken to orange as they age. Flowers are edible. Eaten raw, the flowers are slightly sweet with nectar and often fried with eggs.
It prefers fertile and well-drained sandy loam with a pH between 6.1 and 7.5, in full sun to partial sun. If your soil is heavy clay instead, mix 2 inches of compost into it to lighten its texture before planting pakalana. Perennial zones 9b+ (protect from hard freezes). In colder climates, it can be grown as a potted plant indoors or moved indoors over the winter.
