Nurseryman Henry Eckford (1823–1905) cross-bred and developed the sweet pea, turning it from a rather insignificant if sweetly scented flower into a floral sensation of the late Victorian era.
This sweet pea plants produce fragrant blossoms that are red, salmon, pink, white, lavender, and purple in color. Plant them in a sunny location, preferably full sun, keep them watered, dead-headed, and otherwise happy, they will provide blooms all summer long.
Along with beautifying stark walls, fences and anything else they are allowed to climb in the yard, sweet peas are excellent as a cut flower in the house.
