Asimina has large simple leaves and large fruit. It is native to eastern North America and collectively referred to as pawpaw. The genus includes the widespread common pawpaw Asimina triloba, which bears the largest edible fruit indigenous to the United States. Pawpaws are native to 26 states of the U.S. and to Ontario in Canada. The pawpaw is a small patch-forming (clonal) understory tree found in well-drained, deep, fertile bottomland and hilly upland habitat. Very hardy zones 5-8. Pawpaws are in the same plant family as the custard-apple, cherimoya and soursop, however, this genus is the only member of that family not confined to the tropics. Ripe paw paws emit a beguiling scent of mango, banana and other tropical aromas. The fruit have a sweet, custard-like flavor somewhat similar to banana, mango, and pineapple, and are commonly eaten raw, but are also used to make juice, ice cream and baked desserts. Fruits and leaves have many medicinal properties. The seed must remain moist and cool but not frozen until spring.
