Mullein is a tall (2-7 ft) fuzzy plant that has yellow flowers growing off of a stalk from March to November. It thrives in disturbed areas. The leaves are twelve inches long at the base and get smaller as they grow up the plant. Every part of mullein has medicinal virtues. The leaves and flowers are used to soften and soothe, while the roots have a more warming and drying energy. Mullein leaves are nourishing and nutritive. Herbalists use mullein leaves in tea, to support people with asthma or bronchitis or for those inhaling irritants like pollution or wildfire smoke. Mullein’s large, hairy leaves can feel like thick, dense wool. Used as a poultice on the chest, mullein leaves can help move stagnancy in the lungs, increasing a healthy, thin mucus that can be readily expelled. Dried stalks have been dipped in wax to be used as candles and the yellow flower has been used as wool dye. The seeds contain small amounts of rotenone and coumarin; Eaten by fish, they can make the fish inactive enough to be hand-caught, so the plant was used as a fishing aid. A truly versatile plant, that asks very little, and gives so much. Biennial or short-lived perennial zones 3 to 9.
