Cordia boissieri, also known as Anacahuita, is a highly attractive shrub with very beautiful flowers, that can be trained into a small tree. Drought tolerant and handles windy and coastal conditions. Birds eat the fruit and the flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Though the fruits are sweet, they are considered slightly toxic to humans when fresh and must be cooked. Indigenous people make jellies and dyes from the fruit and use the wood for firewood and light carpentry. Zones 9-12. Hardy to 18F, full sun, tolerates reflected heat. Seeds (whole fruit) are available October/November.
