Althaea officinalis is a perennial herb which is used as a medicinal plant and ornamental plant. Marsh-mallow roots are a wonderful food source. The entire plant is edible and each part offers tremendous health benefits and has been used as a herbal remedy for thousands of years. Historically used for creating the marshmallow confection, the plant is now predominantly grown for making herb teas and as beneficial insect attracting shrub. Marshmallow’s creamy white roots have a wonderful flavor when simmered. How large plants grow contingent of how much water they receive. Provide plants generous spacing, as root crowns can increase substantially year over year. Zones 3 to 7.
