Adonis aestivalis, the summer pheasant's-eye, is an unusual and showy medicinal and ornamental herb plant with feathery foliage and brilliant blood-red, poppy-like flowers. It is native to Europe and has been introduced elsewhere, such as the western and eastern parts of the United States.
According to Greek mythology, Adonis was a handsome young man who was loved by Aphrodite. He was killed by a wild boar and his blood is said to produce the red flowers of this species. Makes a delightful plant for the border.
It is an annual wildflower, so it blooms in the first year and reseeds itself. All Zones. In some locations, it grows as a perennial.
