This exotic tree is staggeringly beautiful when in bloom - and it blooms for many weeks! Manglieta insignis belongs to the family of the Magnoliaceae, and occurs amongst others in Tibet.
The bark is grayish. The leaves of M. insignis are simple, lanceolate, lightly glossy and deep green. The red lotus tree is an ever green. At flowering time not all flowers open at once. The petals are thick and fleshy. They are rose to dark rose in color but get white in the center. Even the buds of the flowers are spectacular. They are also rose and stand upright at the branches. It looks like someone has put many candles onto the branches. The flowers have a very pleasant fragrance. The plant does not always bloom in the first year. One has to have some patience, but it is worth it! The fruit is longish and purple. It gets 3" inches long.
Cold hardy zone 7-11, otherwise grow as a potted specimen in colder climates or trimmed for bonsai culture.
