Salvia apiana, White sage, also known as sacred sage, is an evergreen perennial native to the Southwestern United States. The beautiful white foliage of this indigenous plant sets off the silver-blue flowering spikes. This is the most highly valued and revered of all North American Sages. Foliage is light green to white when the plant is young, and turns very white as the plant matures, and especially after drying the leaves. The characteristic perfume of this plant is sweet and penetrating. This potent herb has been used for centuries by Native Americans in rituals of cleansing and healing. Many people continue this tradition today by holding their own white sage smudging ceremonies and burn it to clear energy and restore balance, for protection and spiritual purification. Hardy to Zones 7+, otherwise grown as a potted plant and protected from frost.
