This plant is a herbaceous perennial plant that is species to native North America. It grows in damp to wet soils and also is cultivated as a garden plant for its striking, beautiful flowers that attract butterflies and other pollinators!
It is an upright, tall plant growing up to 40 to 50 inches in height and has thick, fleshy white roots, blooming from midsummer producing beautiful, small, fragrant vanilla scented pink to mauve or white flowers. The flower color may vary in shades of purple to soft lavender or soft pink. After Blooming the green seed pods are produced that split open and release white silky hairs that float off in the wind. They are highly sought after for their ability to attract Monarch and Swallowtail butterflies.
