Bear Grass is a a grass-like perennial closely related to lilies reaching 2 to 6-feet in height. It grows in bunches with dull, olive-green leaves, used in Indian basketry. The flowers of bear grass grow on a stalk that can be 6 feet tall with many small flowers. Each flower is creamy white, and saucer shaped, and has a sweet
aroma. The lowest flowers bloom first, creating a tight knot of buds at the top. The entire flower looks a little like fluffy, upside down ice cream cone.
It is known by a few common names, including bear grass, squaw grass, soap grass, quip-quip, and Indian basket grass.
Bear grass is usually only found wild in open forests and meadows at sub alpine and low alpine elevations. Superb plants in borders and suitable for containers .
Plant prefers rocky, fast-draining soil, part shade to full sun, in open, coniferous forest habitat. Sow in fall or early spring. Seeds requires cold stratification. Grow out in a gallon pot for a year before transplanting.
