Chayote is a warm-season, tender perennial. Fruits are very mild and slightly sweet in flavor and has a texture somewhere between a potato and pear and is delicious raw in salads, baked, roasted or pickled or used as apple substitute in apple pies. The shoots and leaves are often consumed in salads and stir fries. The prolific plant prefers warm climates, ample soil moisture and plenty of sun. Suitable for containers in cooler climates.
