Hibiscus tiliaceus is a species of flowering tree in the mallow family. It is a large, stout, open-branched shrub that reaches a height of 8-10 feet average, and can grow just as wide if not pruned. The smooth 4-8 inch leaves are heart shaped. The flowers of H. tiliaceus are bright yellow with a deep red center upon opening. Over the course of the day, the flowers deepen to a peach, orange and finally red before they fall. Really amazing. Sea Hibiscus is well adapted to grow in coastal environment in that it tolerates salt and water-logging and can grow in quartz sand, coral sand, marl, limestone and crushed basalt. It grows best in slightly acidic to alkaline soils. Zones 9b -11 or otherwise container.
Hibiscus tiliaceus is widely used in Asian countries as a subject for the art of bonsai, especially Taiwan.
