Senna alata is often used as both an ornamental and medicinal plant due to its laxative, purgative and anti-fungal properties. The attractive shrub is named for its flower buds which grow in a column and look like fat yellow candles each complete with a flame! The leaves fold together at night.
Senna alata hails from the Tropics, including Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.
If grown from seed, they need to be started early in a warm sunny location, to mature to blooming age before first frost.
