This extremely rare variety is from South America. A summer squash variety in a different species (C. maxima ) than other summer squash like zucchini (C. pepo). The sturdy upright plants are resistant to squash bugs. The round 3-4" fruits are meatier and firmer than most other summer squash and the flavor is superb. Zapallitos have an edible rind and can be eaten whole as a summer squash when small. Or they can be allowed to mature and enjoyed as a winter squash. Best picked young and are great for fresh eating. Flowers are edible too. Heat loving and very productive and continues to set fruit until frost.
