The striking flower with three names is one of California's most striking perennial plants. Over time, it can grow into large sizes with seasonal heights of 6-10 ft. tall and spreading by underground stems 10-12 ft or more across.
Although they are not always easy to establish, once they take off, they need nothing whatsoever provided to them, no water aside from rain, no fertilizer, no mulch, no attention of any kind. They go completely dormant in summer and come raging back again the next spring. The massive 4-6 inch flowers have a faint citrus scent most noticeable when in full bloom. Very attractive to honey bees.
Matilija poppy grows best in loose and well-drained soils and with little need for summer water after their flowering cycle is complete. Perennial in zones 7-11.
Skill level: Advanced - due to difficult germination. GA3 or smoke treatments are beneficial in promoting germination.
Other Names: California Tree Poppy, Romneya, Coulter's Matilija Poppy, White Poppy, Californian Tree Poppy and Fried Egg Flower.
