Kochia scoparia (syn. Bassia scoparia) is a large annual herb in the Amaranth family native to Eurasia. It has been introduced to several parts of North America, where it is found in grassland, prairie, and desert shrub ecosystems.
This plant is grown as an ornamental for its green feathery cypress like and then intense red fall foliage. It is a medicinal plant often used in Chinese medicine. May be shaped with shears. They are good for windy locations, and thrive in hot, dry, average soil. Plants will tolerate the hottest summer. It is probably best known for it's stunning colorful display in the Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka Japan.
Seeds are used in Japanese cuisine to produce a garnish called Tonburi (Land Caviar). Kochia requires bright sunlight and moderate water. Annual.
