Chayote is originally native to Mexico. Chayotes (pronounced chahy-oh-tee) are a light green, pear shaped fruit with a single, large pit and edible flesh and skin. The flesh of the 4-6" chayote is very mild and slightly sweet in flavor and has a texture somewhere between a potato and pear and is delicious raw in salads, baked, roasted or or pickled. The shoots and leaves are often consumed in salads and stir fries. The prolific plant prefers warm climates, ample soil moisture and plenty of sun. Suitable for containers in cooler climates.
Chayotes are also known as mirliton/mirleton, cho-cho, chouchoute, choko, Christophine, Chou chou, creeping potato, pataste, chayote squash, pipinolish, pipinola, chouchoute, xuxu, custard marrow, Sayote
