Portuguese Cabbage possibly the most popular vegetable in Portugal, frequently used in ‘caldo verde’ a soup considered to be the national dish.
It is non-heading like typical cabbages yet more fleshy and succulent including the mid rib and leaf stalk unlike those of the Kales which are often too woody to eat.
Somewhat sweeter in taste it has larger flat round grey/green leaves displaying distinctive white veins and mid rib that extend out from a stout firm stalk like the collards.
With a similar tolerance to cold conditions like Kale it also withstands heat better than any other brassica.
