The ornamental Phyllanthus emblica, also known as amla, is a small to medium sized tree, reaching 26 Ft in it's natural habitat, however is much smaller in US cultivation. The branchlets are glabrous or finely pubescent, 6-7' inches long, usually deciduous; the leaves are simple, subsessile and closely set along branchlets, light green, resembling pinnate leaves. The flowers are greenish-yellow. The fruit are nearly spherical, light greenish yellow, quite smooth and hard on appearance, with six vertical stripes or furrows.
Ripening in autumn, the berries are harvested by hand after from the upper branches bearing the fruits. The taste of Indian gooseberry is tart and is usually candied or used for juicing or jams. According to Dr. Oz, for those afraid of premature aging, Amla may provide benefits for the liver, digestion, heart, skin and hair. Suitable for zone 9B+ or as a house plant.
