Orange Butterfly Bush is a woody perennial flowering shrub in the figwort family that typically grows 10'-15' but has been known to grow taller under some conditions, but an annual pruning once flowering ends will keep it smaller, if desired. It is native to South America where it grows in both dry and moist forests. In the landscape, it prefers to be planted in the full sun in loamy, moist, fertile, well-drained soil. It has an open gaunt habit but becomes dense as it ages. Its striking orange flowers appear on the previous season's growth and the nectar attracts butterflies, honey bees and hummingbird moths. To maintain an attractive shape prune it after flowering. Tolerant of clay, drought and deer. Zones 7-10.
