This highly sought after perennial variety is a cross between M. grandis and M. baileyi. There is evidence that this hybrid occurred independently in the early 1930s in several gardens as widely separated as in the south of England and in Scotland. The first instance recorded was by William George Sheldon in 1934.
With enormous deep cobalt blue flowers, up to four inches across, this is certainly the best blue poppy ever available. It multiplies up steadily each year into a massive golden-haired clump which can be divided to increase the size of the bed, and in a shady spot with moist, organic-enriched soil, a bed of these plants makes an unbelievable sight. This reliable perennial is far superior to the already famous Meconopsis betonicifolia. Creates a spectacular feature in shady areas. Grow in loose, peaty, moderately rich, slightly acidic, very well-drained but evenly moist soils in part shade. Plants prefer cool humid shade in woodland-like conditions, with cool summers and mild winter temperatures. Zone 5-7
