Named in 1818 for German botanist, Fredrich Sellow, who studied South American flora. The long stalked plumes have been used in floral arrangements for over 150 years.
Pampas grass is commonly used to add structural elements to the landscape. Plants form wide, dense clumps of slender, six-foot long, evergreen saw-toothed leaves. Many upright stalks form in mid to late summer topped by full pink billowing plumes. Blooms persist for many months, fading to tan in late season. Mature height is 5-7 feet.
Uses: Tender perennial (USDA zones 7-11). Can be grown as an annual in cooler climates. Seeds germinate readily in 2-5 weeks when provided temperatures of 75F/24C.
Plants perform best in full sun to moderate shade in a location with good drainage. Blades have sharp edges and should be situated out of reach accordingly.
Excellent cut flower - fresh or dried
