Also known as Firebush or Summer Cypress it is a hardy and drought-tolerant foliage plant grown as ornamental. It is a quick growing plant that tends to form rounded or pyramid body of dense leaves and branches.
Young plants of Kochia are bright green and color but turn fiery red to copper and crimson in cooler climate as they mature. Thin and finely cut leaves of Kochia add to its ornamental value. Kochia is probably best known for it's stunning colorful display in the Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka Japan.
Seeds are used in Japanese cuisine to produce a garnish called Tonburi (Land Caviar).
