Chayote is originally native to Mexico. Chayotes (pronounced chahy-oh-tee) are a light green, pear shaped fruit with a single, large pit and edible flesh and skin. The flesh of the 4-6" chayote is mild in flavor and has a texture somewhere between a potato and cucumber. The shoots and leaves are often consumed in salads and stir fries.
The prolific plant prefers warm climates, ample soil moisture and plenty of sun. Suitable for containers in cooler climates.
Chayotes are also known as mirliton/mirleton, cho-cho, chouchoute, or choko.
