Paeonia lactiflora, the Chinese Peony is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant, native to central and eastern Asia. Paeonia lactiflora is about 3-5 feet tall with large compound leaves 8-15“ long. The flower buds are large and round, opening into large flowers 4-6“ cm diameter, with 5-10 white, pink, or crimson petals. Peonies generally prefer cooler climates and are easily grown from USDA Hardiness zone 3 through 8. Gardeners in zone 2 and 9 however have reported success with some peonies.
